expose yourself – reflecting nicholas carr’s point of view

nicholas carr - wikipedia

nicholas carr

nicholas carr is well known for his controversial perspective on different internet topics. he sees a lost of privacy in the internet and predicts the transparent user in 2015, he blames users and governments of offering way too much information and not being aware of the danger. sometimes nicholas is a bit over the top, still i think he got some good points in his book and blog. i totally agree with him on the fact that people are not aware of the danger.

people-search-engines such as yasni provide already very good profiles about users of facebook, xing or flickr. by predicting patterns, connecting information, relating items and pictures it is easily possible to build profiles about people of interests. by having access to someones’ instant messenger it is possible to log status messages and online time and easily predict where and when someone will be. stalking was never easier. but is this dangerous?

libby hoeler - first internet video star

to give you and idea about the danger: in 2001 a home video of colleague student libby hoeler was made public; incl. her telephone number and address. soon stalkers were waiting in front of her house, she received calls from strangers and was sexual harassed. when she tried to disappear an internet chivvy started with thousands of internet users trying to find her. at the end she joined a witness protection program.

back then there was no facebook available. nowadays people know your friends and family, social connections, locations etc. with some information from facebook and some social attacks like phone calls it is pretty easy to find out much more information about you. and from my point of view it is pretty easy to drive you mad, resp. destroy your life.

this happened in case number two in the US. in 2008 lori meier and her daughter virtually bullied a student until she committed suicide. they set up a virtual character called josh to get in touch with the girl and used insider information to get her attached. when virtual josh ‘broke up’ with the girl she hang herself.

the described stories are a result of extreme criminal energy but show the potential risk. less tragic, but as well very controversy, is the story of james brennan from the UK who was fired for a comment on facebook. in this case colleagues collected private information in order to set him up. just think of everything you have ever watched, commented or stated on the internet (pictures, blogs, forums, etc) and imagine someone puts the pieces together.
there is not even a need for a complex collection of information, just imagine what you can do with a simple telephone number: post a VW Golf on mobile.de, price 1000 euro, with the phone number of your victim. believe me, the telephone will ring all day long. post it on an internet sex site and the phone will ring all night long.

it is easy to become a target and with nowadays information it is pretty easy to destroy a reputation. take care of what information you offer on facebook, google or youtube. sometimes a little less is a little more.

photoshop alternatives

whoever thinks photoshop is too expansive got some great alternatives. a colleague of mine send me a link to paint.net, an open source graphic program very close to adobe photoshop. i am amazed by the quality of the tool, even it is a bit slower and misses some features.
paintnet
another great tool is sumopaint from finland. it is web based and therefore available wherever you are. sure, it is a bit slower, but for just fixing some pictures it is an amazing tool. check it out, its free.

adidas SLVR store online

slvr59_smlthe new adidas SLVR store is online. for the past weeks we worked hard to get it up and running. SLVR is a new adidas line for the style sector. the label recently won the “Best Sportswear” category in Wallpaper`s annual design awards for 2009.

whats special with SLVR? “With an eye to the environment, SLVR products reduce complexity. This simplicity is also beneficial for creating dependable and timless yet fashionable products. (more)”

anyway, we supported SLVR by setting up the adidas SLVR online store which i proudly present – adidas SLVR online store (german version: shop.adidas.de/SLVR/). it is a sub-store of shop.adidas.co.uk; customers can order products from both stores with only one checkout. check in and buy!!

using web apps while speaking on phone

as heise technology review reported, mountain view based company Ditech will launch a platform called mStage which connects telephone calls and web 2.0 technology. the idea is to identify key words from a telephone call and present related search results on the web browser. an example: talking about eating pizza for lunch would automatically activate a search for the menu of the next pizza nearby. sounds great, especially taking local based functions into account that could be mixed up with the mStage service.
another scenario would be to automatically add contacts to address book or social networks; ‘phone, please add the caller ID to my phone book and add him to my facebook account’. this would finally end the fumbling with the phone when typing down phone numbers while speaking.

as you can see in the attached video, voice-controlled web search is already working pretty good on the iPhone 3G. it actually just has to adapt and ‘learn’ to interpret and understand the user commands while having a phone call. a key word could help, such as ‘phone’ or ‘command’.

Rebecca Swensen, analyst at ‘IT market research IDC’, sees the communication industry changing towards voice-controlled web applications. the biggest hurdle will be to win the consumer for such new and unknown technology, rebecca states.

rebecca is right; convincing the consumer wont be easy. especially if they would have to pay for it. but mStage content could be financed through affiliate programs (or other) and therefore be offered charge free. boxed as an iPhone application many users might just try it and stick with it.

innovations from thailand

over christmas we were on vacation in thailand – beautiful beaches, great food and lovely people. every morning the hotel provided us with the bangkok post that has a very well organized section about IT news.

the article about the winner of the Samart Innovation Award catched my attention. the first price (100.000 baht – around 2100 Euro) went to three students from Mahidol University. they developed a tool to track and block your mobile phone in case it gets lost.
the silver award went to three teams including the Coresonx Project, an entertainment application by students from King Mongkut Institute of Technology; the Mobile Remote project, a program that can remotely control a desktop computer via mobile phone by students from Chulalongkorn University; and hiLive, a mobile application to interact with the hi5 social networking site by Thammasat University students.

the presented solutions show that thai students operate on similar topics as western ones. i am pretty confident that it would be possible to build a company in europe on the ideas (or even applications).

the results seem to be good, the ideas are up to date and the developing costs are extremely cheap (average income in thailand is 80 USD/month). even if the solutions might not fit all expectations (why so ever), the ideas could easily be adopted to european solutions. using the market for prototyping, idea development or just as a think tank could enrich the western startup scene.
