octopus smart card

octopus gate

octopus gate

imagine you leave your home with no key, wallet or metro ticket – because you do have all you need implemented in your watch. This is possible in hongkong.

the hongkong subway ticket “octopus card” works like a prepaid card you can use for travelling with the subway. wherever you enter the subway you just put the octopus card on the reader and it registers where you enter the subway. when you leave you swipe the card again and the amount will be subtracted from the card. so far not that innovative.

octopus payment solutions

octopus payment solutions

innovative is that every shop can implement the system as a payment solution. it is possible to pay with the octopus card in nearly all shops. if you buy something in the supermarket, 7eleven or mcdonalds – just swipe your octopus card. furthermore it is used for registration purposes or as a security key. “students can use octopus to complete a number of administrative tasks at school, including library loans… many residential estates and commercial offices have adopted octopus as a security access system, providing added convenience for over 100,000 residents and employees.” over 17 million octopus cards are currently in use, 95% of the hongkong citizens use the card and over 2.000 service providers are connected to their system.

like a lift-ticket in the alps it is even possible to use a watch, the mobile phone or jewellery instead of a card. fairytales say that some people even implemented a octopus-chip to their body, i do actually doubt that one. but believe me, in hongkong everything seems to be possible.

it is to question who gets access to all the information that is stored on the card (where did someone travel, what did s/he buy, where did s/he gained access etc). as well some commercial systems make use of the data and use it for personalize commercial, if the user wants to benefit from certain bonus programs (optional). still, the possibilities of the system are great and the flexibility it offers me by not taking any money, credit card or key with me is just perfect.

beside all the features already offered by the octopus card, the hongkong government is even thinking of integrating the (already existing) hongkong digital passport to the card… more information to come.

adidas new corporate intranet

adidas performance

adidas performance

as already stated i am currently involved in the “New Corporate Intranet Project” for the adidas-Group. head of internal communication, christian kuhna, introduced the project on the Enterprise 2.0 Forum in cologne some weeks ago. martin koser and june brenner kindly summarized the presentation in their blogs – martins blog (english), junes blog (german).

as discussed by christian we were facing some challenges by consolidating all global intranets to one major intranet, especially on the navigation part. as most affiliated groups, adidas is structured in a complex way what makes it difficult to just rebuild the structure on one navigation.
by using meta tags on all articles our approach is to not use a hierarchical structure than more a pool of articles that can be sorted in any way. ibm is using a similar approach – their intranet does not contain any sort of navigation than is based on one major search engine. still, due to business requests we might have to rebuild the traditional navigation, even the technology in the background totally changed.

more information to come when the new intranet is released. until then please find information on blogs from martin and june.

film people start up in munich

rollcallpool cafe

rollcallpool cafe

a couple of weeks ago we went to munich to meet some friends, visit the octoberfest and enjoy the city. (un)fortunetaly all tends at the octoberfest were filled so we went down town. we decided to head for the area around sendlinger tor, heading down thalkirchner strasse. in other words we went straight to gay area of munich. but beside the pure gay clubs there are a lot of really nice restaurants, bars, clubs and caffees. there are planty of it and the restaurant we went to, a persian one, had awesome food.

but i actually want to tell you about the club we experienced later on, rollcallpool caffee. a very small club, tiny to say, offering space for maybe 10 to 15 people. the bartender told us that it actually is a caffee/bar for all people from the movie business; unfortenetally they had to close at 10 pm. therefore we had to act like actors or camera men that were networking after work. and i tell you, there were a lot of actors and camera men there!

the owner of the club is a production company that opened the club to give producers, actors, students and others some space to meet, dicuss and exchange knowledge about the film business. a great idea and a very nice club.

such clubs offers a special spirit because they have the goal to connect and build up something instead of making profit. people come there to talk about ideas, dreams and maybe make a film, found a startups or just drink coffee. i love the idea of connecting people from the same business and giving them space to get sómething started. maybe one day a great company will conquere the film market and we were there when it was foundet – without being aware of this important moment in history.

if you come to munich and want to have a good time go to rollcallpool caffee and explore how film people “start up”.
